What is a cookie?

A cookie is a little piece of information that websites store on your computer to enable it remember you if/when next you visit that site. This way the site remembers some of your preferences and choices so that whenever you go back, options can be automatically customized to suit these preferences thus saving additional time re-entering information. For example if you visit a site that has banner ads, a cookie will help the website to know what ads have been displayed to you so as not to keep repeating the same ads.

Also, if you visit a site that is dependent (or customized based) on geographic region, a cookie can help the browser know what time zone you are in by asking for your time zone the first (and only) time you visit so you don’t always have to keep providing the information.
